One of the most important and underrated responsibilities of the House Financial Services Committee is oversight of the Federal Reserve, particularly through the semiannual Humphrey-Hawkins hearings.
This responsibility is all the more consequential given the extraordinary challenges the Fed has faced over the past six years: implementing the CARES Act facilities, the rise of inflation, and unprecedented attacks on its independence.
Rigorous congressional oversight and accountability are critical to maintaining the Fed’s legitimacy, both politically and in financial markets, and ultimately to preserving its independence.
Throughout her leadership of the committee, Representative Waters has demonstrated a sophisticated understanding of monetary policy and the Fed’s dual mandate, pushing the central bank to balance its commitments to price stability and maximum employment while defending its independence.
Representative Casten’s views and record on monetary policy and Fed oversight are less well known to us and to the public at this stage. We look forward to hearing how he would approach this crucial responsibility as the committee’s leader, and how he would ensure the Fed remains both independent and accountable to Congress.
